The rights and freedoms that the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) did not sustain in the JB Peterson case of 2023-24,1 were honored this past week by the UCP (United Conservative Party) of Alberta when announcing The Jordan B. Peterson Law:
Over the past five years especially, there has been an escalating culture of coercion — a knee-jerk response to questioners or skeptics of trending dogmas, whether Woke. COVID, Climate, etc. The world has witnessed numerous attempts to cancel, disparage, fire, or de-license critical thinkers if they did not bow to narrative stories. With a Heroes and Hydras blog,2 I began to highlight some of those unbelievable injustices by licensing bodies — injustices that were documented during the National Citizens Inquiry of Canada (NCI).3 The SCC did not appear to be listening to the lessons of the NCI when they affirmed a very public coercion of Jordan Peterson.

But finally, Alberta has taken the lead in putting a stumbling block in the path of authoritarian licensing bodies who have taken upon themselves to punish and re-align thought, belief, opinion, and speech that does not conform to their thought, belief, and opinion. The Jordan Peterson appeal4 was a classic case of fighting bully culture. That legislation should be required to hedge against such authoritarianism is unfortunate, but THANK YOU Alberta for resisting the tyranny of so many licensing bodies. May every province take up the torch of aggressively protecting free and critical thought, opinion, belief, and expression.
Perhaps we should all be more assertive in demanding that all bodies answer: "By What Authority?"5
