Classic Capitalism for Romantics?

(This post and the previous one—Natural or Unnatural?—were triggered by a recent post entitled, Socialism for Dummies And Nature for the Savvy.¹)

What does one say to Econ Romantics¹ when seeing they see not? when hearing they hear not? And what is it they do not see and hear? Could it be the real world of nature and human nature²? Could it be the contradictions in their own reasoning?

How do we always get to the state of "crony-, corrupted-, monopolistic-, fascist- capitalism" if it is not via the romantic notions of free, unregulated, invisible-hand dynamics that allows the natural man³ and his Systems to do their own thing for their own (so-called) best interest? Adam Smith's invisible-hand may have some application to small, local economies, but go national, mega, or global and the natural, capitalist hand always becomes a fist.

Indeed, what a boon the romantic construct of “free markets” has proven for people without conscience (PWOCs) in a real world where too many meet the criteria of psychopathy⁴—where corporations (CWOEs) rate even worse.⁵ Even Adam Smith knew that  the trio of competition, profit motive, and human nature was a toxic mix that a Utopian notion of “free markets” could not survive:

People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is impossible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and justice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies, much less to render them necessary. (The Wealth of Nations, p. 148—I.X.I)

When masters combine together in order to reduce the wages of their workmen, they commonly enter into a private bond or agreement not to give more than a certain wage under a certain penalty. Were the workmen to enter into a contrary combination of the same kind, not to accept of a certain wage under a certain penalty, the law would punish them very severely; and if it dealt impartially, it would treat the masters in the same manner. (The Wealth of Nations, p. 164—I.X.I)

Adam Smith even recognized the meritocracy trap:

... This disposition to admire, and almost to worship, the rich and the powerful, and to despise, or, at least, to neglect, persons of poor and mean condition, though necessary both to establish and to maintain the distinction of ranks and the order of society, is, at the same time, the great and most universal cause of the corruption of our moral sentiments. That wealth and greatness are often regarded with the respect and admiration which are due only to wisdom and virtue; and that the contempt, of which vice and folly are the only proper objects, is often most unjustly bestowed upon poverty and weakness, has been the complaint of moralists in all ages. (The Theory of Moral Sentiments, p. 58—I.III.III)

Is not the current college admissions scam⁶ the perfect exposure of meritocracy posturing? that what we call meritocracy often has an underbelly of vice and folly, faking and fraud, entitlement and egoism, oppression and suppression, crime and corruption?

When will the Econ Romantics finally admit that classic capitalism is a phantom construct that could never survive unredeemed human nature?—a human nature that has manifest in every age, beginning with Cain⁷? a human nature exacerbated by a competitive system and spirit that stimulates the worst aspects of the natural man? a competitive system that rewards greed, corruption, and conspiracy? If the word conspiracy bothers anyone, just re-read Adam Smith above—just review the entire history of those pursuing and protecting power and gain.

Take this romantic statement:

In a free-market economy as in nature, when something emerges that is non-natural and which tries to block nature and prevents the natural system from running, that non-natural element is quickly rooted out. Hence, the classic, capitalist, natural economy has built in protections against greed and corruption.⁸

Yet in numerous paragraphs that author laments the corruption of so-called classic capitalism. But if the "classic, capitalist, natural  economy has built in protections," why has this “natural” economy not corrected the greed and corruption that characterizes the present system? How does classic capitalism expect to protect against fear and favor paradigms that PWOCs exploit to further their power and gain agendas? How does classic capitalism expect people-WITH-conscience to freely and fairly compete with PWOCs who will say and do anything for the sake of increasing power and gain—to "ensure [their] own survival"? with PWOCs who seek to compromise and corrupt everyone and everything for the sake of domination? How does classic capitalism expect to "control" PWOCs without violating the "free" in free-markets?

The simple, historical truth is that free-markets can never survive PWOCs. PWOCs love the romance of free competition. In economics, competition is the very toxin that poisons "free and fair." Competition justifies and rationalizes most of what PWOCs do for power and gain. Thus, as long as we romanticize power and wealth in place of “wisdom and virtue,” we fall squarely into “the complaint of moralists in all ages” (as Adam Smith says) and into the concentrations of power and wealth in the hands of a few PWOCs running CWOEs.

Competition for profit and market-dominance is the heart and gut of capitalism, but, as usual, romantic, classic capitalists shunt the natural, inevitable consequences of competition (concentration, corruption, conspiracy, disparity, elitism, etc., etc.) onto the tyrannies of socialism—a conflation and projection that boggles plain and simple observation—manifesting a classic blind spot that might warrant a reading of Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People and an in-depth consideration of The Powers That Be: Theology for a New Millennium.

Do we really think that competition is a heavenly value? How much advancement and artistry have we forfeited because competition was the paradigm we preferred over freely-chosen cooperation and sharing? What would our world be like if more of us chose the better-half of our dual natures—freely sharing our skills, gifts, and potential—becoming unnatural beings—refusing to be corrupted by the dueling fists of socialism and capitalism?⁹ As one writer observes:

Mammon is wiser in its way than the dictator, for money enslaves not by force but by love.¹⁰

What if most disparities and poverty are inevitable by-products of a competitive system (classic or otherwise) that blatantly rewards greed, corruption, and dominance?—that penalizes transparency and integrity? What if we promoted a system that encouraged and rewarded the gifts and potentials¹¹ of every human from a win-win perspective instead of the win-lose of competition? a system that rewarded the best of the individual within society and society within the individual? a system that honored values beyond profit and bottom line? a system that was not a toxin but an elixir favoring transformation?

What if we are already witnessing a blossoming of cooperation and sharing that is beginning to transform parts of our world? Has humanity ever shared so freely and so much (e.g., apps, podcasts, videos, themes, plugins, photos, books, wikis, crowd-funding, open source, gifts-without-guile, etc., etc.)? What if Daniel Pink is right that there is a greater motivator than money¹²—a motivator that competitive capitalism may not comprehend (may even try to corrupt) because it cannot put a price to it?

What if we could, person by person, business by business, begin shifting away from the poisons of competition and bottom-line obsession into a paradigm of freely-chosen cooperation and sharing? Would it make a difference if our economic system appealed to the best in human nature instead of the worst or instead of crushing the human spirit? Would we find more truth and hope for humanity—fewer lies about the poor and disadvantaged; less romanticism about powerful, wealthy elites—if we fostered and honored the Spirit of Cooperation above that of competition and/or control?

Note: In anticipation of the cry that a gift economy, itself, could never survive the unredeemed nature of PWOCs and the so-called “undeserving” poor—that a gift economy (mutual/reciprocal offerings) is not just its own egregious romanticizing, but unbelievable-pie-in-the-sky—there may be truth in that because PWOCs corrupt everything they can, even gift-giving, BUT, if people with conscience began living a gifts-without-guile economy, maybe PWOCs and CWOEs would have less opportunity to corrupt and more opportunity to witness a better way.

Natural or Unnatural??

(Trying to unpack the words)

(Updated from a post of March 14, 2014*)

Every so often, my Christian friends wax patriotic about natural law, and I have to take a time-out to calm myself. Here’s why:

1. God's continual lament¹ about human nature is that man is an egocentric, rebellious, wayward creature whose natural inclination is to self-will, gain, and domination. Yet we ignore God's analysis of our natural inclinations while our philosophers invert the definition of natural, confounding history and observation. When we buy into this inversion, we buy into all the confusions and conflations that follow.

2. In individual and corporate application, natural law,² despite its inverted romantic definitions, more often than not, looks and acts like the Law of Nature.

3. When one lives near a wilderness (or anywhere, for that matter), one quickly observes that the observed Law of Nature is “red in tooth and claw,”³ as in

fight or flight kill or be killed survival of the fittest survival of the most cunning eye for eye, tooth for tooth might claims right prides and packs competition hording	theft ambush zero-sum domination oppression suppression war abuse etc.

4. In our world of opposites and opposition,⁴ red in tooth and claw” is an opposite of the Golden Rule—an opposite first chosen (and romanticized⁵) by a chap named Cain.

5. Yet, many believers in the Golden Rule (in likeness of many non-believers) seem to run their businesses and achieve their prosperity as if the Law of Nature were the chief and only law.

6. The Law of Nature is the law favored by the Natural Man; and this is the word on the natural man:

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.⁶

For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint [an unnatural man?] through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.⁷

And here is an example of the Natural Man:

And many more such things did [Korihor] say unto them, telling them that there could be no atonement made for the sins of men, but every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius, and that every man conquered according to his strength; and whatsoever a man did was no crime. And thus he did preach unto them, leading away the hearts of many, causing them to lift up their heads in their wickedness, yea, leading away many women, and also men, to commit whoredoms—telling them that when a man was dead, that was the end thereof.⁸

7. Natural Law is also oft equated with Natural Rights, except, these so-called, “Natural Rights” of life, liberty (freedom of speech, religion, association, press; etc), and the pursuit of happiness don’t seem to be very natural, as in: usual, normal, ordinary, expected, common, likely, etc—especially considering the déjà vus of history and the blood spilt to get or keep them. (Just ask Iranians, Iraqis, Egyptians, Syrians, Koreans, Russians, Americans—North & South, Chinese, et al. al. al.) So, could we stop calling our Rights “Natural”! How about Innate? There is a vast difference—chasm size—despite the equated synonyms. But no, that doesn't feel quite right either. Maybe the best word is simply Human Rights. or maybe Inherent Rights.

8. The Law of Nature (or what is deemed natural) is not the source of “Human Rights”; rather, it is the nemesis. No one in our fallen world gets to freely exercise “Human Rights,” UNLESS the-powers-that-be transcend the Law of Nature / Natural Law into a Higher Law that honors “Human Rights.” (Just ask the world’s refugees, citizens of tyrannies, employees of out-sourced factories / farms, persecuted minorities, survivors of genocides, or pretty much anybody who observes the world.)

9. When “Rights” are touted as being grounded in the Law of Nature or Natural Law, it tends to encourage and justify the “ME-MINE” mentality romanticized by Ayn Rand’s Objectivism.⁹

10. The Law of Nature in the grip of the “rational¹⁰/natural” man becomes a wolf in sheep’s clothing, “pulling the wool” to justify disparity, avarice, inequity, excess, meritocracy and all that stuff in 2 above.

11. The opposite of (the observed) Natural Law (each creature/man for himself) may perhaps be termed “Unnatural Law” (love / respect for thy neighbor as thyself). Just observe the Natural Law of the average 2-year old or corporate CEO; or ask Ayn what is unnatural? (Could she mean altruism?) Or ask God. Strange as it may seem, Ayn and God seem to agree that altruism is unnatural the Natural Man.

12. In short, all life is protected and prospered in their Human Rights only when “eye for eye”¹¹ is transcended by “eye to eye”¹²—the Law of Nature transcended by the Law of Love—the Way of Love.

13. Alfred, Lord Tennyson said it poetically:

Who trusted God was love indeed
And love Creation's final law
Tho' Nature, red in tooth and claw
With ravine, shriek'd against his creed.

So, how about we “believers” get over our infatuation with the inverted Natural Law and all its confusions, conflations, and justifications and work toward the Unnatural Law of

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.¹⁴

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil [with evil]: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.¹⁵

How unnatural is that? loving our enemies, blessing them, praying for them? How about each person freely choosing to adopt a gift economy¹⁶ instead of being forced into a competitive (capitalist) or a state-controlled (socialist) one? Perhaps these are just two faces of a single coin vying for heads-up domination in this fallen realm?

Let us be more conscious in observing ourselves and our favorite pundits. Do our / their words, views, actions, and economics favor the manifest Law of Nature or the higher Way of Love?

The Science of Science Fraud

Take a natural man /woman* who:

▪ becomes enamored with an idea or theory;
▪ believes their idea /theory is unique and/or revolutionary;
▪ spends days, weeks, months, years studying and/or testing the idea/theory;
▪ knows that confirming the theory will bring accolades and recognition;
▪ believes there is potential for great wealth in “verifying” and publishing;

1)  Gather fellow activists and agree on a flight day and time.
2)  Convince a person of means to donate to your cause.
3)  Buy as many discount tickets as your group needs.
4)  Use the principle of flash mob—perhaps 6 to 10 of you at a time.
5)  Space yourself as appropriate in the molestation line.
6)  When your turn comes, refuse the molestation.
7)  Be rational, articulate, and firm.
8)  Speak truthfully, but do not humiliate the TSA agent—use civil disobedience.
9)  Affirm that flying is not worth the price of humiliation.
10)  Have a fellow activist film the encounter.
11)  Post it to social media.
12)  Repeat in U.S. cities everywhere, as often as possible.

If the TSA can do Airport Theatre, perhaps the (un)common man and woman can write and perform their own theatre scripts—making a scene and a difference.

The Two-edged Sword of Technology?

In this age of masterful deception, we have been put on notice: DON'T trust what you will be seeing and hearing in coming days!

The warning comes, courtesy of the MIC, aka, the Military Industrial Complex¹ — a complex that has for years been engaged in pursuing and protecting power and gain at any cost; a complex that has become the prime sycophant and order-follower of the Hidden Complex. However, this MIC warning is not to make citizens and consumers skeptical of MIC info, but rather to increase trust in the MIC — in that perceived protector of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; of peace, property, prosperity, democracy, justice, and TRUTH.

EXCEPT the MIC is not as it makes itself appear. It has been infiltrated and corrupted to a degree that most cannot conceive. Every value it espouses in office and field has become the opposite² of what it does. It enlists and / or deludes many innocent, altruistic citizens into compartmentalized work zones to carry out its unified crimes against humanity. (Not to mention, mercenaries and private contractors enticed into psychopathy for gain.) The MIC corrupts and compromises all that it can, then it suppresses, mocks, maligns, or murders every attempted exposure of its conspiracies and crimes.

SO, in this prop-op³ warning, the MIC is casting upon the waters a preemptive message:

“Do not trust any forthcoming images of
    ▪ MIC "elites";
    ▪ NATO or other military / "intelligence" comrades; or
    ▪ political, government, entertainment, sport, corporate, or supporting stars and friends
doing evil, unconscionable, inhuman things
UNLESS we, the MIC, or our associated alphabeters, say the images are trustworthy.”

See, technology has thus far aided MIC corruptions and conspiracies, but it has also resulted in loss of control of images that insiders are now desperate to keep secret in order to retain their own power / prestige and their power over others. The sword that has allowed them to compromise and blackmail is now about to cut the other way.

For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.⁴

In the meantime, the Hidden Complex using the MIC is attempting to bring us to a point of utter mix-up.⁸ We are being primed to believe fake images constructed to destroy whistle-blowers, truth-tellers, conspiracy theorists, reactionaries, "enemies", etc. but not the real images that “malign” (expose) power-and-gain-brokers and their supporters.

So how do we judge? By their fruits? But what if their fruits are suppressed or covered up by comrades? other conspirators? benefactors? complicit media? by fearful silence?

We are indeed approaching a state of confusion and conflict like the world has never seen, unless this is but a déjà vu from Noah's day.⁹

How reminiscent this all is to the life-drama I've witnessed many times wherein the actor playing the devil would say with menace: “I will buy up armies and navies, popes and priests^[10] and reign with blood and horror on this earth.” What a succinct summation of world history!
