Boondoogle?

Do we need a new word?

Here's an old one: boondoggle (pronounced boon -dog-gull):

A boondoggle is a project that is considered a waste of both time and money, yet is often continued due to extraneous policy or political motivations.

Here's a possible new derivative: boondoogle (pronounced boon-doo-gull):

A boondoogle occurs when a corporation or entity that began its existence with a vision of service to humanity and with a mantra such as “Don't Be Evil,”¹ BUT, due to the rapid accumulation of wealth and a burgeoning sense of omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence, loses its way and falls into an inversion of purpose.
   [Usage example: The ABC Corp did a boondoogle.]

A recent case in point of a boondoogle, you ask? Just “google” the name Zachary Vorhies,² (ex-employee of Google) or, better yet, avoid the “hit pieces” and go directly to

Should we be surprised at this boondoogle considering the spirit of power³ that seems to overwhelm most institutions and people who come anywhere near the seduction so perfectly described 180 years ago?

We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men [and institutions], as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.⁴

In the words of Walter Wink:

An institution becomes demonic when it abandons its divine vocation for the pursuit of its own idolatrous goals.⁵

Exposing the delusional system is the central ascetical task in our discernment of the Powers. For the Powers are never more powerful than when they can act from concealment. ... to masquerade as the permanent furniture of the universe, to make the highly contingent structures of current oppression appear to be of divine construction—such is the genius of their deceptive art.⁶

The mighty prefer, therefore, to rule by means of invisible constraints: unseen filaments tied to the public's arms and legs, and imperceptible spiritual brain-implants causing the masses to will to be what has been made of them.⁷

But Wink also says:

The Powers are not intrinsically evil; they are only fallen. What sinks can be made to rise again. We are freed, then, from the temptation to satanize the perpetrators of evil. We can love our nation or church or school, [or corporation] not blindly, but critically, recalling it to its own highest self-professed ideals and identities. We can challenge these institutions to live up to the vocation that is theirs by virtue of their sheer createdness. We can oppose their actions while honoring their necessity.⁸

The Fall does not mean that everything we do is evil, vain, or hopeless, but merely that it is all ambiguous, tainted with egocentricity, subject to deflection from its divine goal, or capable of being co-opted toward other ends.⁹

Perhaps this current boondoogle is just one more ironic fulfillment of old Isaiah's words from circa 700 BCE?

[T]heir works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: ...¹⁰

Let us, WE THE PEOPLE, find ways to help turn these boondoogles back to their high vocations and potentials.¹¹

Let us muster the courage to speak of the “spirituality of institutions”:

Any attempt to transform a social system without addressing both its spirituality and its outer forms is doomed to failure. Only by confronting the spirituality of an institution and its concretions can the total entity be transformed, and that requires a kind of spiritual discernment and praxis that the materialistic ethos in which we live knows nothing about. To put the thesis of these three volumes in its simplest form: The Powers are good. The Powers are fallen. The Powers must be redeemed.¹²

The Reality of Virtual Fakes & Frauds?

So here we go: if the CoCF¹ can't find evidence (“facts”) to compromise, smear, threaten, or blackmail every living soul, they can now (and probably since the 1990s) manufacture nigh unimpeachable evidence (proof?) of whatever they can imagine. (Like unto the days of Noah²? Like unto the times and Tower of Babel³?)

Numerous studies have shown that power is an aphrodisiac for almost all humans.⁴ Thus, if we continue in the present course, can there ever be an end to what the CoCF (and eventually others) may resort to to augment power and control through technology.

THE Hundredth Monkey?

(Thoughts sparked by two friends' advocacy of “The Hundredth Monkey Effect.”)

“The hundredth monkey effect is a hypothetical phenomenon in which a new behaviour or idea is claimed to spread rapidly by unexplained means from one group to all related groups once a critical number of members of one group [critical mass] exhibit the new behaviour or acknowledge the new idea.¹ (Italic emphasis added).

When I hear about a concept that I haven't studied, I try to research both advocates and skeptics of it (see ● below). The “hundredth monkey effect” (HME), that my friends repeatedly spoke of over the past few days immediately raised cautionary flags and questions:

1. In the 40-odd years since the HME idea surfaced, have we observed any replication of it anywhere in nature—where knowledge or behaviors acquired by another or others transferred suddenly, mysteriously (mind to mind) to all members of a group?
2. Is the HME an unproven extrapolation from what has been called “spooky action at a distance”² as observed in the subatomic world of quantum mechanics?—that deep-level, foundational world where strange things like nonlocality and entanglement are claimed to occur?³ where matter apparently manifests in ways contrary to our general experience and awareness of being local and un-entangled? But, has any of this been proven or is it all still theoretical?⁴ Maybe Richard Feynman is still right: “I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics.”⁵
3. Is the HME just an imaginary shortcut⁶ to knowledge without regard to preparation, effort, study, motivation, desire, openness, willingness, observation, etc.?
4. Isn't the idea of “critical mass” a collectivist notion?—that individual advancement depends on a collective to shift the world to a new consciousness? (Like Mark Passio's longed-for 51 %?)
5. Is this idea not a recipe for disappointment, anger, and conflict with those who delay or refuse to augment the critical mass of the enlightened? (Just listen to a recent Passio!⁷)
6. If persons are sovereign, enlightened individuals (as many claim), why are they so bound to this dimension by the uncooperative, unenlightened collective? Is it by contract? by agreement? by sacrifice?
7. Isn't the goal of critical mass, the mid-game⁸ of most LGATs⁹ (Large Group Awareness Training) with their promises of raising consciousness of attendees and unpaid volunteers?
8. Does the HME keep believers in continual pursuit and recruitment of the critical ONE—THAT TIPPING POINT person?
9. Could the HME be another manifestation of “science in crisis”?¹⁰
10. Is there new age, paranormal purpose in keeping the HME idea alive?

Two years ago, I quoted from Cicero:

A Message to the Mark Passios of this World

Yes, there are huge problems in this world (with order-followers being a major one), but how do we listen to you without remembering how déjà vu you sound? how familiar your “righteous” tirades against “undesirables”? how repetitive the preludes to tyranny and justification?

Words matter, so perhaps it is time to review the words of Philip Zimbardo of the Standford Prison Experiment and author of The Lucifer Effect.¹

One of the worst things that we can do to our fellow human beings is deprive them of their humanity, render them worthless by exercising the psychological process of dehumanization. This occurs when the “others” are thought not to possess the same feelings, thoughts, values, and purposes in life that we do. Any human qualities that these “others” share with us are diminished or are erased from our awareness. This is accomplished by the psychological mechanisms of intellectualization, denial, and the isolation of affect. In contrast to human relationships, which are subjective, personal, and emotional, dehumanized relationships are objectifying, analytical, and empty of emotional or empathic content.

The misperception of certain others as subhuman, bad humans, inhuman, infra-human, dispensable, or “animals” is facilitated by means of labels, stereotypes, slogans, and propaganda images.²

We Told You So

To the many debunkers / mockers of “conspiracy theories”:

Perhaps it is time to reconsider world history and ask:

▪  why so many fiction and movie plots deal in conspiracy and secret combinations?

▪  why the same applies to many, many nonfiction books and documentaries?

▪  why so many investigations and court cases reveal secret works to achieve criminal or deceptive agendas?

AND perhaps it is way past time to finally admit that there are more people without conscience (PWOCs) in this world (and throughout history) than we would like to admit whose driving purpose in life is/was to become rich, powerful, or famous at any cost, OR who are/were possessed by a spirit of domination and/or cruelty.

So the 64M$ question is: Which of the so-called “conspiracy theories” being mocked today will, in due course, be admitted and proven? And the bigger question? how much unconscionable experimentation, crime, corruption, and suffering could have been prevented if we had recognized and admitted at the outset how repetitive conspiracy and secret combinations have been throughout human history? How long must we romanticize the conscienceless pursuit and protection of power, gain, and fame? How many déjà vus till we slap our foreheads and admit: Most of the “tin-foilers” were right-on-the-money?
