Love Canal* ~ An Analogy

(Thoughts engendered from too much reading and seeing.)
(If you do not remember “Love Canal,” see the note at * below.)

If 22,000 tons of buried toxic waste can poison an entire community and make it uninhabitable, what might 22,000 arrows of abuse do to a single soul? But can we even number the wounds if the victim’s mind replays and relives the trauma, ad infinitum, as even one horrific event becomes an endless conveyor of pain? And if one event can trigger endless pain, what will chronic abuse, bullying, and denigration do? What do abused children carry into adulthood? What happens if they find themselves in a relationship that incessantly affirms a severely damaged self-image? And what happens if an un-abused child grows up to live for decades thereafter with an abusing spouse or partner?

For far too long, science has ignored or minimized the consequences of trauma and bullying, as is outlined in a speech by Bessel van der Kolk, MD:
Childhood Trauma, Affect Regulation, and Borderline Personality Disorder [BPD]
(Yale University conference; Time: 1:09:06)
at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2NTADxDuhA
But everywhere we are seeing the “fall out,” not just of childhood traumas, but of psychopathic bullying1 in adult relationships.

If one lives for decades within a toxic, abusive dumping-ground, do we really think there is no corrosive, consuming, creeping, enduring poison? Why do we see increasing numbers of wounded souls acting-out and acting-in?

Why is there still so little recognition—so little help for emotional dysregulation?2—for those living along a continuum that stretches all the way to what some call Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and beyond? Some manifest as classic-BPD (acting-out); others as quiet-BPD (acting-in). If you or a loved one (an estimated 18 million in America) are enduring many of following symptoms, can you recognize and/or admit the possibility of a toxic base that is NOT your fault,3 but somehow your legacy (and your challenge)?
Persistent feelings ofManifestations of
deep sadness   extreme sensitivity to invalidation
  worthlessness  extreme sensitivity to rejection
  not deserving   mood-dependent memory
  emptiness  black and white thinking
  numbness  idealizing and judging
  distrust  paranoia
  loneliness  blaming others
hopelessness  difficulty living “in the present”
fear of abandonment   clinging or pushing away
  deep rage  impulsivity
“no one loves me”  mood swings
“no one can understand”    problems with attention, focus, concentration
“I don’t know who I am.”           thinking distortions
  chronic emotional pain  self-harm
self-hatred or loathing  thoughts of suicide
  shame  amnesia
  guilt  overwhelming emotions
These are separate, incomplete lists and not correlated between feelings and manifestations.

Despite all the above (and more), can you begin to believe there is help and healing—if you can be open to it?

Can you understand the unbearable tension of opposites (the dialectic) that oft “rules” your life?—a tension that can play out in several ways, including:
»  On the one hand, if you are in an abusive relationship, your soul cries out for love and affirmation, BUT your self-image of being worthless, unlovable, undeserving, etc., etc., etc. is being affirmed or validated—abuse upon abuse.

»  On the other hand, if you have found someone who truly loves you and treats you lovingly, your damaged self-image may find it almost impossible to trust that love. You begin to interpret expressions of love as phony, manipulative, agenda-driven, or you conjure, provoke, mis-remember, or forget things in order to ease the tension or “prove” your negative self-image. You idealize relationship and cannot bear the inevitable disappointments. If self-awareness is not forthcoming, that tension between accepting genuine love versus your self-image cannot be sustained. One of the polarities has to give, and too often it is NOT the self-image that you have lived with for decades. You split from the love (the contradiction) and for a time find relief from the tension, but it cannot endure for the human soul cannot fully live without the hope of love. And so you may try again. And again. And again—
Thus, in millions of damaged lives, the “Love Canal” that was designed to carry living water has become a waste dump covered over by a leaking subconscious. And so, without awareness, you keep breathing-in and ingesting the toxicity that permeates the air and ground water of your life; and you continue to rage at the pain, the poisoned relationships, the fear, and brokenness of your life.

If only you could see the dialectic. If only you could move off the toxic dump. If only you could acknowledge how you are letting the past poison your present; how it will forever poison your future unless you can forgive4 (however excruciating), and let the past go—the only way to healing. Your past or current abuser’s cruelty is either a choice or an illness (or a mix). Your choice can be to move forward toward healing and healthy love.

If only you could say to yourself:
“No wonder I feel this way. No wonder I behave the way I do. No wonder I have the thoughts I do. No wonder I am so angry and reactive. No wonder my life has been such an expanse of recurring emptiness, pain, and misery5—
“BUT, in spite of all that, I do not have to self-abuse by believing abusers; by remembering or replaying their abuse; by self-harming, by allowing.
“I don’t need or want to live this way. I don’t need or want to feel, think, and do the things I do. I want and need to trust in healing and healthy love. There are proven therapies.6  I will seek them out in wisdom.7 I have healthy options.
“I am moving off the toxic dump, NOW & FOREVER.”
Why not begin in this month of abuse awareness and prevention?—or any day you read this for every day is a good day to begin—a good day to continue moving forward.

* Love Canal was a neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York, located in the LaSalle section of the city. It officially covers 36 square blocks in the far southeastern corner of the city. [Love Canal came from the last name of William T. Love, who in the early 1890s envisioned a canal connecting the Niagara River to Lake Ontario. … He envisioned a perfect urban area called "Model City" and prepared a plan with a community of parks and homes along Lake Ontario. His plan was never realized. He began digging the canal and built a few streets and homes when his funds were depleted. Only one mile (1.6 km) of the canal, about 50 feet (15 m) wide and 10 to 40 feet (3 m to 12 m) deep, stretching northward from the Niagara River, was dug. … With the project abandoned, the canal gradually filled with water. The local children swam there in the summer and skated in the winter. In the 1920s, the canal became a dump site for the City of Niagara Falls, with the city regularly unloading its municipal refuse into the pit.] By the 1940s, Hooker Electrochemical Company (later known as Hooker Chemical Company), founded by Elon Hooker, began searching for a place to dump the large quantity of chemical waste it was producing.”] … In the mid-1970s Love Canal became the subject of national and international attention after it was revealed in the press that the site had formerly been used to bury 22,000 tons of toxic waste by Hooker Chemical Company (now Occidental Petroleum Corporation). / Hooker Chemical sold the site to the Niagara Falls School Board in 1953 for $1, with a deed explicitly detailing the presence of the waste, and including a liability limitation clause about the contamination. The construction efforts of housing development, combined with particularly heavy rainstorms, released the chemical waste, leading to a public health emergency and an urban planning scandal. Hooker Chemical was found to be negligent in their disposal of waste, though not reckless in the sale of the land, in what became a test case for liability clauses. The dumpsite was discovered and investigated by the local newspaper, the Niagara Falls Gazette, from 1976 through the evacuation in 1978. / Ten years after the incident, New York State Health Department Commissioner David Axelrod stated that Love Canal would long be remembered as a "national symbol of a failure to exercise a sense of concern for future generations." 4. Forgiveness does not mean that justice and judgment should not be vigorously advocated to enforce accountability and to prevent further abuses. Lawful justice and judgment should be pursued, but forgiveness may mean you forego your interpretation of what is just and give it over to God. If you don’t believe in God, (which may be the case for many abused), try to leave justice and judgment to the law (however flawed) in order to free yourself from the poison.

Rose-colored Specs ?

When one reads Henry Kissinger’s World Order, one gets the oppression of rose-colored glasses—not that Mr. Kissinger was always wearing them while writing (except respecting America and world order), but that they are imposed upon his readers without apparent scruples or apology. As an insider, he must surely know that his focus on “American” morals, idealism, and exceptionalism neglects most of the story. The tragedy of unacknowledged U.S. history is the multitude of crimes and misdemeanors against founding principles; but HK studiously avoids the dark-side of American tyranny and international sabotage. He quotes former presidents whose idealistic words often belied their covert actions. If only we could juxtapose all those quotes with the global images that preceded or followed them.1

Chapter 7 is entitled:
“Acting for all Mankind”: The United States and Its Concept of Order
In this chapter, the rose-tint deepens to an embarrassing blush. The hagiography2 of past presidents (words without images) is astonishing—as are the many egoist references to American principles, such as:
John Foster Dulles … described American foreign policy as a kind of global volunteer effort guided by principles totally different from any other historic state’s approach (pp. 287-288).

With nearly every president insisting that America had universal principles while other countries merely had national interests, the United States has risked extremes of overextension and disillusioned withdrawal (p. 279).
HK seems so spellbound by his idealized America, it makes one wonder if the same applies to his World Order; and thus makes one shudder at the thought of what greater part he might also be excising about the dark-side of WO. If he can’t bring himself to acknowledge the dark-dark side of “American Order,” can we trust him to reveal the ins-and-outs of WO?

At times, one hears the echo of narcissism and wounded pride wafting between the lines of World Order. Poor US. We have proselytized our virtues, values, and principles for well-over two-hundred years; we have demonstrated our exceptionalism and superior policies; we have given our best and our brightest, all in the name of raising the world to a higher plane of “humane” rights and prosperity, and for what? Too often for naught—because those “old” states across the ponds are so caught in their never-ending spirals of balance-of-power, competition, nationalism, status-mongering, fanaticism, mistrust, etc., etc., such that even the newer (giant) kid on the block can’t break them of that great chain of being tyrannical, egoistic, imperialistic, and ungrateful.

Except, as is troublingly evident, Mr. Kissinger neglects to remind US that the giant kid on the block has been running amuck for more than a century: lying, extorting, covert-ing, coup-ing, drug-running, kidnapping, torturing, terrorizing, killing.3

And for those who have just gone ballistic at these “accusations,” please get a grip on your intellect. The evidence is everywhere4—not because muckrakers hate America, but because they love what she once stood for—what she still pretends to stand for. And they hate that she has become one of those déjà vu “hypocritical nations” that Old Testament Isaiah denounced.5

Not only is America multi-faced, she is also hypersensitive and spellbound by her own promise and perceived destiny. If the truth could be seen, she has become a Dorian Gray.6 So, in World Order, Mr. Kissinger parades us through a White House museum of carefully selected memorabilia draped-round with ten-thousand flags (while the super-“men in black” line the staircase leading to the attic6).

As we exit the museum—past the permanent shadows on the fireplace mantel7—we are handed a tissue and a tract. The tissue is to weep for the blindness of the nations who have thus far resisted our vision, virtues, and policies. The tract is the concluding chapter of WO, summarizing for the masses how the American promise can still be morphed into global governance—a global order of “democracy” (hint, hint: corporatism8).
A world order of states affirming individual dignity and participatory governance, and cooperating internationally in accordance with agreed-upon rules, can be our hope and should be our aspiration. But progress toward it will need to be sustained through a series of intermediary stages (p. 372).
Fine-sounding phrases, but where have we heard those before?—from the lips of past presidents?—or forming the complaint of a wandering prophet 2,700 years ago? How might old Isaiah reframe the complaint if he were speaking as voice for the beleaguered Constitution? Would the voice say:
This people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me?
And what might Mr. K.’s “needed” intermediary stages entail to get everyone on-side the WO? Could #1 on the Georgia Guidestones9 give us a clue? That could certainly solve the problem of the nasty muckrakers, not to mention those born-again communists, those intransigent religionists and fanatics of every stripe, and all those down-and-outers of every “nation, kindred, tongue, and people.”

Yes, World Order is a book of some insights, but the rose-tint and the radical excision of more than half the historical truths of the body-politic is beyond troubling—especially when one considers the admiration Mr. K. has for the “principles” of statesmanship allegedly set forth by Machiavelli.10

1. Consider this small sampling of facts and patterns of American “values” worth studying and remembering: Native American and African-American treatment, past and present; Hawaii 1893; Cuba 1898; Philippines 1899; Nicaragua 1909; Honduras 1912; Japanese & Japanese-American internment 1940s; Iran 1953; Guatemala 1954; South Vietnam 1963; Cambodia 1970; Chile 1973; Indonesia/East Timor 1975; Grenada 1983; Panama 1959-89; Afghanistan 1980s to present; Iraq 1960s to present; hundreds of SOFAs and military bases worldwide; economic sabotage; etc., etc., etc.
NOW juxtaposed with statements from Mr. Kissinger’s World Order:
● Before the ayatollahs’ revolution, the West’s interaction with Iran had been cordial and cooperative on both sides, based on a perceived parallelism of national interests. (p. 158)
● President McKinley: “The American flag has not been planted in foreign soil to acquire more territory, but for humanity’s sake.” (quoted at p. 246)
● President Theodore Roosevelt: “All that this country desires is to see the neighboring countries, stable, orderly, and prosperous.” (quoted at p. 250)
● [Section heading} Woodrow Wilson: America as the World’s Conscience (p. 256)
● Imbued by America’s historic sense of moral mission, Wilson proclaimed that America had intervened not to restore the European balance of power but to “make the world safe for democracy.” (p. 256, see also 258)
● Woodrow Wilson: “Self-governed nations do not fill their neighbor states with spies or set the course of intrigue to bring about some critical posture of affairs which will give them an opportunity to strike and make conquest.” (quoted at p. 259)
● All twelve postwar presidents have passionately affirmed an exceptional role for America in the world. Each has treated it as axiomatic that the Unites States was embarked on an unselfish quest for the resolution of conflicts and the equality of all nations, in which the ultimate benchmark for success would be world peace and universal harmony. (p. 276)
● ... American idealism and exceptionalism were the driving forces behind the building of a new international order. (p. 277)
● With nearly every president insisting that America had universal principles while other countries merely had national interests, the United States has risked extremes of overextension and disillusioned withdrawal. (p. 279)
● America has been searching its soul about the moral worth of its efforts to a degree for which it is difficult to find historical parallels. Either America n objectives have been unfulfillable, or America did not pursue a strategy compatible with reaching these objectives. (p. 279)
● In this context, the United States assumed leadership of the global effort to contain Soviet expansionism—but as a primarily moral, not geopolitical, endeavor. … as a moral crusade for the free world. ¶ … to advance the general interests of humanity. (p. 287)
● The preservation of American credibility in defense of allies and the global system of order—a role the United States had performed for two decades—remained an integral part of Nixon’s calculations. (p. 300)
● America as a shining city on a hill was not a metaphor for [Ronald] Reagan; it actually existed for him because he willed it to exist. (p. 311) / … Reagan believed the [Cold War] conflict was likely to end with the realization by the adversary of the superiority of American principles. (p. 312)
● … the perennial American hope for a rules-based international order (p. 315)
● In Prague in November 1990, [George H. W.] Bush invoked a “commonwealth of freedom,” which would be governed by the rule of law; … “a moral community united in its dedication to free ideals.” … [to] “forge for all nations a new world order far more stable and secure than any we have known.” ¶ “Our overriding purpose must be to expand and strengthen the world’s community of market-based democracies.” (pp. 315-316)
● Bill Clinton: “The United States wants Iraq to rejoin the family of nations as a freedom-loving and law-abiding member. (p. 324)
● … the tragedy of a county whose people have been prepared for more than half a century to send its sons and daughters to remote corners of the world in defense of freedom but whose political system has not been able to muster the same unified and persistent purpose. (p. 326)
● … no other major power has brought to its strategic efforts such deeply felt aspirations for human betterment. (p. 328)
● On the way to the first truly global world order, the great human achievement of technology must be fused with enhanced powers of humane, transcendent, and moral judgment. (p. 360)
● America—as the modern world’s decisive articulation of the human quest for freedom, and an indispensable geopolitical force for the vindication of humane values—must retain its sense of direction. (p. 373)
2. Hagiography: “adulatory writing about another person; biography [histography?] that idealizes its subject.”
3. A second chance to consider footnote 1: that small sampling of facts and patterns of American “values” worth studying and remembering: Native American and African-American treatment, past and present; Hawaii 1893; Cuba 1898; Philippines 1899; Nicaragua 1909; Honduras 1912; Japanese & Japanese-American internment 1940s; Iran 1953; Guatemala 1954; South Vietnam 1963; Cambodia 1970; Chile 1973; Indonesia/East Timor 1975; Grenada 1983; Panama 1959-89; Afghanistan 1980s to present; Iraq 1960s to present; hundreds of SOFAs and military bases worldwide; economic sabotage; etc., etc., etc.
4. Read and listen to (YouTube) the facts and warning voices of Chris Hedges, Chalmers Johnson, Jeremy Scahill, Naomi Klein, Stephen Kinzer, Noam Chomsky, etc., etc., etc.
5. Old Testament | Isaiah 10:6
6. “The Picture of Dorian Gray is an 1891 philosophical novel by writer and playwright Oscar Wilde. First published as a serial story in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. Summary: Dorian Gray is the subject of a full-length portrait in oil by Basil Hallward, an artist who is impressed and infatuated by Dorian's beauty; he believes that Dorian’s beauty is responsible for the new mode in his art as a painter. Through Basil, Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, and he soon is enthralled by the aristocrat's hedonistic worldview: that beauty and sensual fulfilment are the only things worth pursuing in life. / Understanding that his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. The wish is granted, and Dorian pursues a libertine life of varied and amoral experiences; all the while his portrait [hidden in the attic] ages and records every soul-corrupting sin.” From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Picture_of_Dorian_Gray
7. “Shadow on the mantel” parallel: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/bill-clinton-portrait-contains-lewinsky-in-joke-artist-says-1.2979416 “Bill Clinton portrait contains Lewinsky in-joke, artist says: / A Philadelphia artist has disclosed that his museum portrait of former President Bill Clinton contains a shadow reference to Monica Lewinsky's infamous blue dress. / Nelson Shanks told the Philadelphia Daily News that a shadow beside Clinton is a literal reference to the dress and a symbolic nod to the shadow the affair cast on his presidency. / "If you look at the left-hand side of it there's a mantel in the Oval Office, and I put a shadow coming into the painting," Shanks told the newspaper.
[So like this other shadow on the mantel, America’s sins never seem to make it into the picture or enduring consciousness of her citizens.]
8. George H.W. Bush: “Our overriding purpose must be to expand and strengthen the world’s community of market-based democracies.” (p. 316)
Free markets would uplift individuals, enrich societies, and substitute economic interdependence for traditional international rivalries. (p. 362)
The global economic impetus is on removing obstacles to the flow of goods and capital. (p. 368)
[So, are American values and policies to be the mother-lode of WO where global capitalism will finally trump communism? where nations will no longer compete, leaving all that to the “invisible hand” of the corporate capitalists?]
9. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgia_Guidestones
The Georgia Guidestones is a granite monument erected in 1980 in Elbert County, Georgia, in the United States. A message consisting of a set of ten guidelines or principles is engraved on the Georgia Guidestones in eight modern languages, one language on each face of the four large upright stones. Moving clockwise around the structure from due north, these languages are: English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian.
1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely — improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion — faith — tradition — and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth — beauty — love — seeking harmony with the infinite.
10. Be not a cancer on the earth — Leave room for nature — Leave room for nature.
A shorter message is inscribed at the top of the structure in four ancient language scripts: Babylonian, Classical Greek, Sanskrit, and Egyptian hieroglyphs.
[Again, several fine-sounding phrases, but what are the images to accompany their implementation? Is this “American Stonehenge” the model of the “American Order” planned for the world? Is WO in charge? And if not, how does WO plan to get its “agreed-upon rules” past this “cast-in-stone” crowd?]

A Better World ?

Yes, indeed! It’s getting better and better—isn’t it? If you don’t believe, or you find yourself asking, “For whom?” take a listen to the Ira Basen documentary, “In The Valley of the Kings”1 [Silicon Valley, that is] (42.06 min.) at
http://podcast.cbc.ca/mp3/podcasts/sundayedition_20150220_88670.mp3
The world is certainly an over-regulated, mixed-up mess, but do we really think that monetizing / capitalizing, the new “sharing economy” via BIG corporations with clever apps and no regulation is the nirvana we seek? The myth of corporate beneficence2 is almost as true as touting that a “sharing economy” is sharing when everything is for rent.

We have to admit though that there is financial genius in app-controlled, independent little guys doing all the work while the BIG guys skim off the top for providing an automated connection. Except it seems more like “back to the future”—like back to a serfing3 paradigm. Seems like the little guy always gets the squeeze in pursuit of the bottom line.

We should also admit that it does present as a profitable step-up from the Nike, et al. model. Those old-style companies divested themselves of factories, workers, permits, licenses, properties, etc., etc., etc, and claimed ownership only in third-party, third-world  manufactured product. But with the new “sharing” apps, these new companies (like Uber and Airbnb) don’t even have product to warehouse or sell—no cars, no driver costs, no repairs, no houses, no towels or bedding or breakfasts—nothing, niente, nada. All that detail-stuff hangs to the little guy. And yes, sometimes it is good for the little guy and the consumer, but where there is an opening for power and gain, as night follows day, the “sharing-app” execs will find a way to control and exploit with no one to control them.

Besides, in the déjà vus of history, when did the bottom-line make anything safer? (Ask Nader.) When did it bring out the best in integrity? (Observe the tobacco, auto, banker, Wall Street, etc. boys.) When did it foster fundamental human rights? (Read a BIG corp. employment contract.) When did it truly serve the little guy with equity? (Ask the little guy.)

We keep looking to technology to solve our escalating problems and shortcomings, but what if the best solution is not in tech at all—even with all its best advances? What if a better world is in consciousness of spirit and love for our fellow human beings? Yes, let tech be a valuable resource—but please, can’t we keep it free from the prison of corporatism?4

Soda and Circuses ?

Once upon a time, in ancient Rome, a satirical poet observed:
The people that once bestowed commands, consulships, legions, and all else, now concerns itself no more, and longs eagerly for just two things - bread and circuses! (Juvenal, Satires1)
But in our day, now that the once nourishing bread staple has become “gluten-toxic” to tens-of-thousands, we seem to have found the perfect substitute for our sedation. What better companion (or not2) could we have invented to stash within reach of our numerous e-circuses?

But the question is: Have we given up the staff of life for the addictions of life?

When do we clue in that the business of addiction is BIG Business aided by degraded science? Here once again (déjà vu upon déjà vu), we close our eyes and ears to the witness of real science and sensibility. We eat, drink, read, watch, smoke, inject, and medicate with things that have been engineered to maximize their addictive potential.3

Here are two samples of a voice that the majority seem to have ignored:

A Plea to Therapists, Everywhere

(Especially to non-prescribing Marriage and Family Counselors)

▫  You may have had years of experience.
▫  You may believe your skills are sufficient for every (or almost every) case.
▫  You may or may not be a believer in psychotropic drug therapies.
▫  You may feel you keep up-to-date with advancements in your professional field.
▫  You may have thought (even said), more than once, “I am very good at what I do.”
▫  And you may, indeed, be very good,

but in this age of Big Pharma1 and polypharmacy,2 if one of your first inquiries of a new or returning patient is not: “Are you taking any medications?” then, in nigh 100% probability, you are prolonging the suffering, confusion, and peril, not just of your patient, but of those who love that patient. (The same applies to a second question: “Have you attempted or are you now attempting to end a medication regime?”)

So this is the PLEA: Please, no matter how skilled you are:
▪  if you are not asking a patient about medications (& even herbs, supplements, or hormonal therapies that have psychoactive potential);
▪  if you are not factoring in known and potential side-effects;
▪  if you are not knowledgeable about adverse reactions, drug-induced CBI (Chronic Brain Impairment); anosognosia; medication spellbinding, etc.;3
▪   if you think it is not your place to question a prescriber;4
▪   if you are not open to the observations of family and friends of the patient;5
▪   if you are not reading and informing yourself about the mounting, evidence-based damage reports surrounding psychotropic drug use (and other psychoactive substances), AND the pervasive suppression of critical data by drug companies and others;6
then please, please, become humble enough to look beyond your present paradigm. Be humble enough to listen to:

1. “Twenty percent {1 in every 5] of adult Americans were taking psychiatric drugs in 2010—15% of men and 26% of women (Medco, 2011).” As quoted in Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal: A Guide for Prescribers, Therapists, Patients and their Families by Peter R. Breggin, MD, (Springer Publishing Company, New York, © 2013), p. 1.
2. “’Polypharmacy’ refers to the concurrent use of multiple medications in a single patient.” Quoted from a DovePress abstract titled, “Polypharmacy or medication washout: an old tool revisited” at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3215520/
3. See Breggin, Chapter 3: Chronic Brain Impairment: Four symptom complexes: 1. Cognitive dysfunction; 2. Apathy and indifference; 3. Emotional worsening; 4. Anosognosia (patient’s lack of awareness of their symptoms).
Anosognosia: is viewed as a deficit of self-awareness, a condition in which a person who suffers certain disability seems unaware of the existence of his or her disability. It was first named by the neurologist Joseph Babinski in 1914. Anosognosia results from physiological damage on brain structures, typically to the parietal lobe or a diffuse lesion on the fronto-temporal-parietal area in the right hemisphere. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anosognosia )
4. Review Breggin, p. 2-3, section titled: “Relationship between Prescribers and Therapists”; and Chapter 12: Developing Team Collaboration, p. 147-158.
Consider: What is your primary interest—to help your patient in healing or to protect the status of a prescriber?
5. “Always take seriously the concerns of family and friends; they can be the prescriber and the patient’s best ally during psychiatric medication treatment and withdrawal” (Breggin, p. 17). “The patient’s family and friends are often the first to notice adverse drug effects, including overmedication, and the prescriber and clinicians should pay close attention to their concerns and observations” (Ibid., p. 18).

Washout ?

(Re-viewing psychotropic drugs)

Washout
4. (informal)
1. a total failure or disaster
2. an incompetent person
3. dose tapering of medication to more safely discontinue
its use or to (ostensibly) eliminate its effects
before commencing a different treatment regime
(source: industry idiom1)

But perhaps we should expand the meaning of “washout” as we consider:
▪  the effects of profit motive on integrity and compassion;
▪  the psychopathology2 of most profit-driven corporations;
▪  the psychopathology of many HyPEs;3
▪  the massive, addictive profits in PR and propaganda;4
▪  the practice of off-label drug marketing;5
▪  too many slap-on-the-wrist fines (relative to profits); “do NOT go to jail” standards;
▪  the myopia of permitting industry-funded efficacy studies and of FDA revolving doors;
▪  the pervasive “cancer” of publication bias and research misconduct;6
▪  the “accountable to shareholders” con;7
▪  the “rapid increase in the use of polypharmacy in psychiatry”;8
▪  the number of (ignored) witnesses coming forward,9 as in

» Website: http://www.drugawareness.org/
Of course, some(?) percentage of patients may benefit (or believe they benefit) from chemical intervention, but the broad picture established by independent studies is that other non-prescription treatments achieve results (without the severe or dangerous side-effects) that psychotropic drugs do not and cannot achieve by the very nature of how they work and what they, in reality, do.

So, if we consider all the above (and more), perhaps we should add to the washout definitions:

Washout
5. (observed)
1. loss of life, hopes, and dreams of millions of mis-medicated
2. impunity for many drug companies for false and misleading
speech; for frauds and depraved indifference
3. mis-education (and/or apathy) of the prescribed and their
prescribers because of PR / propaganda, (& Rx perks)
4. loss of life, hopes, and dreams of many family, friends, and
victims10 of the mis-medicated

Interesting, is it not, how washout and whitewash seem twin strategies for this profit-driven Hydra?

So here are three questions:
•  How long this culture of denial?
•  How long, with the knowledge and unbiased studies that are out there, before the first question of every marriage & family therapist is: “What are the medications in this family?”11 (Please read the footnote.)
•  How long before we utterly refuse to participate any more in WASHOUT and WHITEWASH?

Remembering George ?

On this date—December 14—215 years ago, General George Washington died under the watchful eye of three physicians. They were using the then standard-of-practice of bloodletting,1 but after four bouts of it, Washington’s fate was assured. Perhaps we could say, he was bled to death.

And perhaps we are in the midst of a latter déjà vu at this very hour as Uncle Sam bleeds toward the same fate—except there are no attendees allowed about the bed. Those trying to enter and save the patient are mocked and defamed while most everyone else is:
▪  at the stock exchange,
▪  “treasure hunting” with their devices,
▪  too busy trying to staunch their own bleeding, or
▪  crying against the offenses of socialism and communism.
However, despite the real offenses of communism / socialism, the more vital, critical health question is: What is the difference between excessive bloodletting and corporate capitalism? No, that’s not quite right. It’s not the difference that concerns us—‘tis the similarity!

See, whichever you choose, the patient dies.

Too bad, we’ve forgotten, not just George, but Thomas:
I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government in a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country.  (Thomas Jefferson ~ 18162)

Whitewash?

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the publication of George Orwell’s novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four,1 which, in the contortions and déjà vus of history, may bring us to Henry Kissinger and his latest book, published September 2014. Kissinger’s name, presiding over the bold and simple title, World Order, presents upon a pristine, white cover.

This year also marks the 225th year since the U.S. Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation (1789; first session, First Congress).

So what, you may ask, is the connection between these facts?

It’s hard to know for sure, but let’s consider:  “We the People” and World Order.

Millions believe that the United States Constitution was and (still) is the best hope and promise of preserving freedom and opportunity in the world.2 If they are right, (and even if they’re not), the U.S. has always advertized itself as the beacon of democratic values; so perhaps we should carefully read Mr. Kissinger’s World Order and ask at every page: What does this book mean for the hope and promise of the U.S. Constitution?

But first, let us acknowledge that Mr. Kissinger undoubtedly reveals some insightful and important things in his World Order for there are huge global problems that only seem to be getting worse. However, in reading World Order, let us also be aware of the grand illusion / delusion that manifests in the very first pages of his book.

Without any apparent cognitive dissonance, he writes:
“… an American consensus—an inexorably expanding cooperative order of states observing common rules and norms, embracing liberal economic systems, forswearing territorial conquest, respecting national sovereignty, and adopting participatory and democratic systems of governance. American presidents of both parties have continued to urge other governments, often with great vehemence and eloquence, to embrace the preservation and enhancement of human rights.” (pp. 1-2)

“In the American view of world order, peace and balance would occur naturally, and ancient enmities would be set aside—once other nations were given the same principled say in their own governance that Americans had in theirs. The task of foreign policy was thus not so much the pursuit of a specifically American interest as the cultivation of shared principles. In time, the United States would become the indispensable defender of the order Europe designed. Yet even as the United States lent its weight to the effort, an ambivalence endured—for the American vision rested not on an embrace of the European balance-of-power system but on the achievement of peace through the spread of democratic principles.” (p. 6)

“The United States has alternated between defending the Westphalian system and castigating its premises of balance of power and noninterference in domestic affairs as immoral and outmoded, and sometimes both at once. It continues to assert the universal relevance of its values in building a peaceful world order and reserves the right to support them globally.” (p. 8)
These head-spinning words are so un-tethered to the real (forgotten / ignored / hidden) history of U.S. involvement in other nations, it staggers credulity. Not to mention what the U.S. government, its corporate bosses and banks, and other hidden handlers are presently foisting upon U.S. citizens. When one reads the many voices of warning and exposés, it becomes apparent that Kissinger’s book may just be the latest whitewash in a long laundry list of offenses against the Constitution and the subsequent Bill of Rights.

When one considers:
▪ his words: “Our age is insistently, at times almost desperately, in pursuit of a concept of world order.” (p. 2)

▪ his awareness that “The modern era announced itself when enterprising societies sought glory and wealth by exploring the oceans and whatever lay beyond them.” (pp. 17-18)

▪ his observation that “A man of the cloth steeped in court intrigue, Richelieu was well adapted to a period of religious upheaval and crumbling established structures.” (p. 21)

▪ his view that Machiavelli’s, The Prince is “a work on statesmanship” and that it “systematically analyzed the requirements of power and survival”3;
shouldn’t these give us pause—if not paranoia?

Is this book just one more trial balloon to further normalize the “idea” of (One) World Order? Though perhaps, it will never get below two or even three because, as we all know from experience and history—war and the threat of war can go a long way to achieving ways, ends, and mean$.

What would George Orwell say about this latest World Order? Perhaps he would lament: “Lucky—but unlucky you. My timing was only slightly off.”

2. Many believe it; particularly those of faith, and especially Mormons, referencing their scripture: Doctrine and Covenants | Section 101:77-80 ~ According to the laws and constitution of the people, which I have suffered to be established, and should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles; That every man may act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according to the moral agency which I have given unto him, that every man may be accountable for his own sins in the day of judgment. Therefore, it is not right that any man should be in bondage one to another. And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood. Doctrine and Covenants | Section 98:4-10 ~ And now, verily I say unto you concerning the laws of the land, it is my will that my people should observe to do all things whatsoever I command them. And that law of the land which is constitutional, supporting that principle of freedom in maintaining rights and privileges, belongs to all mankind, and is justifiable before me. Therefore, I, the Lord, justify you, and your brethren of my church, in befriending that law which is the constitutional law of the land; And as pertaining to law of man, whatsoever is more or less than this, cometh of evil. I, the Lord God, make you free, therefore ye are free indeed; and the law also maketh you free. Nevertheless, when the wicked rule the people mourn. Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil.

Blinding Paradigms?

At some future day, say even 100 years hence, will observers look back upon the age of baby-boomers and their offspring as a bizarre time of dizzying technology AND stupefying intransigence? Will someone begin to quote Charles Dickens,1 lamenting:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of [staggering stupidity hubris]”?
And will someone observe that great crimes were orchestrated by “tight-lipped authorities” who believed that their “superlative truisms” governed the cosmos and all therein and thereout?

▪ Will we even be here in 100 years (yea, even 50) if geoengineering2 and HAARP3 (et ilk) continue their secret combinations (chemical and otherwise)?

▪ Will corporate capitalism4 have lost its gloss in the wake of cause, effect, consequence and destruction; and will it finally be observed that the “capital system” damned more creativity and innovation than it ever encouraged?

▪ Will the nuclear energy industry have finally drowned in its own indestructible, toxic waste?

▪ Will militant scientists atheists finally be recognized for what they are: dogma-driven tyrants—as déjà vu the Inquisition as every other militant bully of past and present?

▪ Will the lies of GMO and industry-sponsored “studies” finally be acknowledged as profit-driven frauds?5

▪ Will the Big Business of fast-food & health chronic sickness finally admit that what is ingested makes a difference?

▪ Will the medical and psychiatric professions have finally accepted evidence-based  (i.e., mostly non-profit and non-pharmaceutical) solutions to the recurring / enduring pain epidemics?6

▪ Will the Electric Universe7 (and other theories that challenge the standard model) have been given a fair and open hearing?

▪ Will “cultural superiority” have given way to the observation that ancient civilizations knew and achieved things we haven’t begun to match?8 that progress has not been linear and gradual? that civilizations, equal or superior, have fallen into dust in obsessive pursuit of excess, disparity, power, and gain? (Oh, déjà vu—again!)

▪ Will the predilection to conspiracy by those pursuing power and gain (and their desperation to deny it) finally be openly acknowledged as a ubiquitous, historical déjà vu?

▪ Will citizens of the “great superpower” ever admit the pivotal role their nation played in the destruction of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, worldwide?9

▪ Will the CAO’s of geoengineering and HAARP be tried and condemned for acts of supreme conceit and criminality (before it’s too late)?

The list could go on and on.

And for those who think that God (plus all the above) is just another blinding paradigm, I suppose we shall all know, sooner or later.
